Today, we are surrounded by top-notch mobile applications that facilitate us with various services to make our lives easy and convenient. Whether we have to order food online or navigate a route or wake up early or schedule a meeting with our client, there is always a specific app for each task on our Smartphones. In short, everything is just one click away, and it seems like that’s the only reason why the app’s business is progressing day by day.
But if we go into the flashback, let say in the 1980s, we will observe that mobile applications have moved from dust to summit in these four decades.
Let’s take a look at the journey of mobile application development.
In 1997, a mobile application called “Snake” was considered as the very first mobile application developed by Nokia in Nokia 6110. Back in 1983, Steve Jobs created the App Store that was an elementary version of itself. Shortly after introducing iPod, Apple introduced iTunes, which is considered as the core application of Apple Inc. Moving forward, in 2007, iPhone got released with some native and essential apps that were much advanced than Snake.
The first App Store in iPhone was launched with more than 400 apps, which means we cannot entitle any app as “the first app.”
Before Android and iPhone, there was an era of Simons. Simons released the first Smartphone in 1994, although there wasn’t any app store in it, it was preloaded with various apps like mail, notepad, alarm, calculator, and phone book.
In 2002, Blackberry launched its first QWERTY keyboard-based mobile, Blackberry 5810. It was the first mobile with wireless email concept.
As we have discussed above, in 2007, the first iPhone was released that changed the definition of mobile applications. It came with advanced-level preinstalled apps such as weather, maps, memo, etc.
Soon after the iPhone release, in 2008 App store was launched with more than 500 apps. As per Steve Jobs, there were almost 10 million downloads on App Store in just three days.
Apps became the word of the century. People became preoccupied with this innovation as all of these apps entertained them with unique features.
In 2012, Google got raged up and renovated the Android market. It took a significant step and brought all of its content and services under one roof, i.e., Google Play. Various apps became an essential part of our Smartphones, tablets, and laptops. Google play collected 1 million downloads in just nine days.
Let’s talk about the revenues generated through mobile applications. It is quite impressive that 63% of iOS revenue was generated through games such as Candy Crush Saga, Temple Run, Plants vs. Zombies, etc.Talking about revenues, how can we forget Angry Birds that reached 4 billion downloads in just four years and even came out with a movie.
Observing all of these scenarios, there is nothing wrong in saying that “the thing that was introduced as a feature has now become a source of a greatest earning of all time, i.e., a mobile app.” - January 10, 2022 at 1:48 pm #89485Elizabeth WarthenParticipant

I’m glad the tenologies are growing every day. There are so many mobile apps, programs, and even cool PC games with the latest design. Technology does not stand still and I try as I have free time to download such things and relax. So I downloaded the game Minecraft which with each update is becoming more extensive and play on. Did you know that there is even a mobile application of the game?

Minecraft in 2009 isn’t the first time it’s been released in 2009.

The concept of an “app” (short for application) can be traced back to the early days of computing, but the modern notion of mobile applications didn’t emerge until much later.
One of the earliest examples of what we might consider an “app” today is “Spacewar!” It was developed in 1962 by Steve Russell and his team at MIT for the PDP-1 minicomputer. “Spacewar!” is often considered one of the earliest digital video games and could be seen as a precursor to modern interactive software experiences.
However, if we’re talking about applications in the context of software designed specifically for mobile devices, the first recognizable mobile app is often attributed to the release of the “Snake” game on Nokia phones in 1997. “Snake” was pre-installed on Nokia feature phones and became immensely popular.
The era of modern smartphone apps really began with the introduction of the Apple App Store in July 2008, when Apple launched the iPhone 3G. This marked the beginning of a new era in mobile computing, where third-party developers could create and distribute applications directly to users through a centralized platform.
So, depending on the context, the answer to the question of when the first app was created varies. It could be as early as the 1960s with “Spacewar!” or as late as the late 1990s with the advent of mobile games like “Snake” and the subsequent explosion of smartphone apps after the launch of the Apple App Store in 2008.
