So, you want to make an app and publish it to GooglePlay right? Wait, do you know that there is more to Android than just GooglePlay? making an app is one part of your app making process, the rest of your career is based upon getting your app downloaded and used and publishing to GooglePlay may not be what is best for your app.
Sorry, I don’t mean to confuse you, afterall you have already created your app and was on the way to publish in GooglePlay and now I have stopped you in your tracks. I am not saying don’t publish to GooglePlay, but I want you to understand that there is much more to the Android app market than just one store. Unlike our lovely friends at Apple, Android does not restrict you to just one market place. Although Android markets are often argued as being fragmented, there is a bonus to the competition that these app markets offer, and that is access to a wide and varied audience, what’s more, not all the Android app markets charge a fee to house your app, some are entirely free.
People automatically consider using GooglePlay because of the branding and more importantly, because of the ease of use, GooglePlay comes already installed on all Android devices making it most people’s default app store. Other prominent competitors to Google Play are Amazon app store and GetJar app store.
Do I have to use an app store to publish my app?
No, you have use other ways to promote your app, but you need to understand that by not publishing in app stores you may be restricting your audience numbers. Take the example of food shopping; you can go and sell your brand of food in your own little shop at the corner of the village, but how many people will realize you are there? Not many, but if you sell your branded food in a large retail supermarket you will instantly grow your audience. In a large store you are not only are your growing your audience, you are also increasing the awareness of your brand.
Which Android app market should I publish to?
This is a personal decision and depends upon your goal, however we recommend that you try more than one place for your app and see which is most successful for you. Remember our food shopping example? OK, if you sell your food in the largest supermarket in town, the audience is going to be large, however, so is the competition. How do you know that from the twenty different types of breakfast cereal, the consumers will choose yours? So what happens if you sell your food in the small kiosk down the road, this store stocks less and has less people coming through their doors, however, your cereal is the only one on offer and therefore is more likely to be seen and purchased.

Do I have to pay to publish an app?
Most of the app stores do charge a fee for publishing your app, such as GooglePlay and Amazon, however there are some free app stores that you may wish to start with. When you are starting out and have just decided to make an app and see what you can do with it, we recommend you try a few of the free stores first and learn from your mistakes. Once your app has been perfected, or you have a network of apps ready to go, then you can start to invest your money.
