The success of any free Android app comes from a number of reasons, starting from the app itself, the app should be fresh, innovative and relevant and then of course we look at the marketing of an app, if your free android app is amazing, but has not been marketed effectively then no-one will know this little gem even exists. Yesterday we began to talk about optimization of Android app and what that really means for you and we briefly touched on the importance of keywords. Today we are going to look a little more in details about the importance of Keywords and how you can choose the right keyword for you to get your free Android app out there and succeeding in that busy marketplace.
Android App Making – Keywords made easy
What is a Keyword?
When we discuss keywords in apps we are referring to the words or phrases that are set up within your free Android app that tell search engines what an app is about. You may have heard about keywords on websites, where the importance is to ensure that keywords appear within the content so the search engine can pick up content that matches the needs of a related search, in the app market this differs slightly because the keywords are picked up in the app downland page only. Keyword stuffing however is illegal, for example you can’t write your keyword repeatedly in a sentence as GooglePlay will immediately pick the app up as spam and your path to success has led straight down to the path to failure.
How do keywords work?
Keywords will help your app to be found in an organic search by being picked out from the app download page and compared to the word place in the search term.
How to I find the right key word?
1: Log on to Google adwords- click here
2: Type in some words related to your subject
3: Note down what words/phrases are used the most often
4: Try a few more times, each time note down your favourites
5: Now go back and check the competition level. It is best to choose a keyword/phrase that has low competition
6: Trial and error – If you find the app does not succeed, try changing the name. On average we have found that apps that change their names up to 4 times see an increase of 7 times the amount of downloads.
Key Word Competition
Why is it so important to not choose a keyword that has high competition level? If the keyword chosen is a word that is viewed over 50,000 times a month but has high competition rate, this means that a lot of people are already using this keyword in their websites/apps therefore all those apps using the same keyword as you will also be brought up in the organic search results. You ideally want to choose a keyword that has low competition. because it means that less apps will appear in the search results and you will have more chance of your app appearing in the first page of search results.
