Hey AppsGeyser readers,
Thank you for the fantastic response from last week’s blog that revealed some of the secrets behind our Android app makers’ success in a short period of time. Today we thought that we would let you in on a few more trade secrets by showing you an example of another app made with AppsGeyser’s tools that has had continued success since its launch in 2011.
Bluby’s Photoshop Tutorials is the app that we are going to look at today. It has successfully received over 325,000 downloads since its launch a year ago and this number is steadily rising. Built using the AppsGeyser’s website template tool this app has a few secrets that we are going to expose.
The app idea
Bluby’s Photoshop Tutorial app aggregates a number of tutorials around known problems with Photoshop and provides easy solutions. It offers a free download app that has restricted information and ads and it also offers a premium app that is ad free and has extended resources.
This app was created using the AppsGeyser’s free website template tool linked to Bluby’s current webpage. Their website is a basic website that was created using text and images and could have easily have been created using a free website maker, such as Google sites .
The unique selling point of this app, which has encouraged its success, is that this app is part of a network of apps that has been built around the tutorial theme; the other apps include tutorials on Dreamweaver, Excel and Adobe to name a few. In addition to the app network, the app maker has also constructed a free version of the app and a premium version enhancing the ability to market their product from within their product.
Why has this app been so successful?
There are a number of reasons that this app has succeeded.
Name of the app: As we have previously discussed in our ASO blog, the name of an app is important if an app is to be found amongst its competitors. Photoshop Tutorial is a clear and concise name that clearly identifies the content of the app.
Icon and Screenshots: Both the app’s icon and the screenshots used represent the exact content that the user will get when they open the app.
App network: Creating a family of apps that are based around the same theme encourages internal marketing. The success of one app can lead to other apps being downloaded and internal advertising of other apps is widely common. Bluby’s other apps are also generating hundreds of thousands of downloads each.
Tip 1: We would suggest that any app maker utilizes the full amount of screenshots that are available on an app storefront. Visual information grabs the attention of the potential user and encourages downloads.
The more successful an app the more revenue the app maker will generate. In the case of Photoshop Tutorials the immense number of downloads will themselves be providing a regular income through advertisements alone.
Integrated ads: AdMob Ads generate on average 1 US$ per 1000 impressions. At this moment in time we cannot know the amount of impressions this app is currently generating, however because this app is a tutorial content based app, users tend to spend a prolonged period of time on this app. The longer user are engaged in the app the more impressions per use. We estimate that there are around 20 impressions download and with over 325,000 downloads the potential revenue is lucrative.
Sale of app: Photoshop Tutorials has a premium version that has resulted in a few hundred purchases and over time this figure will continue to rise.
Tip1: Push Notifications – Alerts can be set up for free users to promote the premium content and boost conversations to the paid app. The most successful way to push the premium app is to show a snippet of the content and include a link to the download page within the alert.
Tip 2: Updating apps – One of the main features in our App Store Optimization Chart is the updating value given to an app. This is important for two reasons; the first, Google Play values app updates as a metric to see if your app is relevant, the more frequently it is updated the more Google Play values the app improving its placing in the app store search. The second reason is because potential users also view a recently update app more positively than an app that has not been updated in recent months.
You will begin to see the common lines between the success of this app and that in our previous post. Succeeding in the app market is not as simple as it once was but by learning he tricks from our successful Android app makers we hope that you will soon be on your way to success.
